Berthal Clair Green IV

Born and raised in Des Moines Iowa, Berthal (Bert) Clair Green IV has dreamt about being an attorney since he was a child. After graduating from Saydel High School in 2017, he pursued his BA in Political Studies (Pre-Law), Psychology, and Philosophy at Grand View University (GVU).

During his time at GVU, he participated on multiple athletic teams, was involved in campus leadership, was the Chaplin of the University’s Choir program, and was inducted into the GVU honor society for outstanding academic performance.

After he graduated from GVU in 2021, Berthal then attended the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law, where he pursued his Juris Doctorate (J.D.) and Masters in Public Administration (MPA).

During his time at USD, Berthal focused heavily on practical courses that advanced his abilities in trial and appellate litigation. Not only did he focus on academics, but Berthal was also a Graduate Assistant (GA) and a member of the USD Trial team for 2 years.

As a GA, Berthal assisted 2nd and 3rd year law students by furthering their education around the Federal Evidentiary Rules and trial litigation.

During his time with the USD trial team, Berthal competed throughout the United States in a variety of different trial competitions. Due to Berthal’s trial skills and brief writing ability during these national competitions, he was later recommended for, and then inducted into, the esteemed “Order of the Barristers” national honor society.

Berthal felt it was important to find balance in his understanding of the law and to also give back to his community. While in law school, Berthal made it a habit to attend as many academic lectures as he could. For doing so, he was inducted into the USD “Tripp Fellow program.” This program acknowledges those students who engaged far beyond the expected academic curriculum. He was also honored with the “Access to Justice Award,” which is given to students who put a high amount of volunteer work back into their legal communities.

After graduating from USD Law in May of 2025, Berthal moved back home to Des Moines to be closer to his family. After moving back, he took and then passed the 2025 July Iowa Bar Exam.
